2K Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Comes After Poor Reception
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the need for a clearer vision.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.
Trend of Key Hires
This announcement echoes a comparable action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the complete content from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game testing phase was revealing. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our audience.
The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. After several months of discussions, Ben officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and experience in the PVP shooter space is vast, having dedicated the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in greeting him in the coming days. We are all eager to persist seeing the progress of the game in the months to come.
The President
Background of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman presently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a public demo. Then, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, risks, and challenges that evolve every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."
Project Ethos does not have an confirmed release date or supported systems, but fans can look forward to further news as production progresses.
